Carmex Flavored Twist Click Stick Review & Prize Pack Giveaway

Carmex Flavored Twist Click Stick Review & Prize Pack Giveaway

Every one in my family has multiple lip moisturizing treatments.  I am the biggest addict with one in my purse, one in the car, one in the nightstand, one in the living room near my computer and one in the bathroom.  Yep you counted that right, I have a minimum of 5 lip moisturizing products open and in use at all times.  My husband is a little more reasonable with only 2 but my daughter takes after me and has many.

We are so addicted to lip moisturizers, I should buy stock!  When given the chance to become a Carmex Blog Squad member, I was thrilled.

As a member of the Carmex Blog Squad, I was sent a great review pack containing a picnic blanket (that my daughter claimed), Carmex Lime Twist Click Stick (yep, she claimed this one too), Carmex Vanilla Click Stick and Carmex Moisture Plus Ultra Hydrating Lip Balm (I insisted that this one is mine but some how she keeps asking if we can share).

Personally, I am not a fan (but my husband is) of the classic Carmex  Jar type of lip balm.  Since I wear my nails long, I hate how it gets under my nails when I would stick my finger in the jar.  This makes their click sticks perfect for me.  The flavored click sticks have that Carmex scent but it is lightened with the hint of Lime, vanilla, cherry, strawberry or mint.  My ultimate favorite is the Carmex Moisture Plus Ultra Hydrating Lip Balm.  It goes on super smooth and does not require constant re-application (even though I do reapply out of habit).

The Importance of Parenting and Family Gifts

The Importance of Parenting and Family Gifts

Family is one of the most important elements of our society in today’s troubled times. This is because the family constitutes people who have an informal association with each other. This association is formed over years of being together and sharing little details about each other’s lives and also helping each other out in times of crisis. At the cornerstone of every family is the little child whose happiness becomes the concern of every member of the family.

There is no one fixed rule of parenting. It is often made really difficult because everyone has something or the other to say about parenting. It is undoubtedly a wonderful experience, but it has its own emotional upheavals that sometimes get very difficult to handle. It is essential to accept that everyone has their own background and beliefs when it comes to parenting.

Some people are willing to take advice from others, while others will never even think about considering what someone else's opinion may be. One way of engaging young ones is to infuse as much positive energy into the child without being judgmental of his/her actions.

A sure shot way of winning the hearts of children is to go on a family trip. If the trip involves a bit of adventure then it will turn out to be all the more exciting for them. To make it enjoyable for the children, you can try boating or fishing in the nearby waters because children are normally drawn to and enjoy the water (and you can do it without spending a lot of money). Anything outdoors is always a good idea. There is always something to explore and something for little eyes and hands to get excited about.

Another fun thing that you can do with your children is to include them in the fun habit of cooking. Cooking should be encouraged, as it helps them when they grow up and also gives you a good chance of bonding and creating wonderful memories together. Just be sure to do age-appropriate activities. You could cut up anything that needs cut and put the ingredients in a bowl and they can stir, etc....

One way to bond the entire family is to give each member a family embossed t-shirt. These have become very popular and are increasingly being available at websites like Amazon. This popular website has full product categories that can make it easy to find family gifts. There are reviews to help you see what others have thought, which can help you decide if what you're considering is a good buy. To top it all there are always Amazon discount codes that makes it cheaper to get the perfect family gifts.

They also have a shopping program you can sign up for that enables you to get free two day shipping or $3.99 next day shipping for each item you order. It's called Amazon Prime and let me tell you... I have never shopped at Amazon so much since I signed up for it. Our Android phone's battery got broke the other day and boom – I had one the next day from Amazon. My step kids were coming over unexpectantly for the weekend and the day after I found out I had a blow-up bouncy in the yard and other fun stuff for them to do. Personally, I LOVE it! There was a free trial when I signed up and you can check to see if it's still available at Amazon Prime.

This website also has gifts like customized wall art for the entire family. You can create pictures of the family tree or take some incident that adds to the family’s heritage. It is also a great way to inculcate a habit of painting and artwork among the children.

Saving Money

Saving Money
Guest post written by my buddy Aldo Mays

With the economy going down the tank and gas prices rising my wife and I have been trying to save as much money as we can. This means eating out less, strategically planning our trips into town, and simply buying off brand items. These changes have been especially hard for me because I grew up in a household where if we wanted something we simply went out and got it, so not being able to spend in a fast and loose way has definitely been an adjustment for me. However, my wife has adapted very easily because her parents were extremely tight with money and she has always lectured me about how we spent money. Overall, the changes we’ve made have been hard for me to live with but one thing that has been fairly easy is working determining what our energy costs will be each month because thanks to www.NewYorkEnergyRates.com our energy cost is fixed and we know exactly what to expect every month. Hopefully, the economy will bounce back soon and I won’t have to worry cutting back as much.

Tips To Help Children With A Move to a New School

Tips To Help Children With A Move to a New School
by Elizabeth Cardin

A huge part of your child’s life is school. It is where your child spends the majority of his or her time. It is very important that your child thrives in the school system that he or she will be placed into. Make sure that your child will be able to fit into the new environment. Yes, location is key. It is definitely easier to attend a school that is in close proximity to your house. But, it is also essential that your child enjoys attending school.

The following are a few tips for having your child feel comfortable with moving to a new school.

1. Have a going away get-together for your child and his or her friends.
Let your child have that moment of full attention. A move can be very stressful on a child. It is likely that your current neighbors will throw you a going away party. This is directed towards you and your spouse, not your child. Give your child the ability to hang out with his or her friends and have one last fun time together. Buy a picture frame and have all of your child’s friends sign it as they come over. During the get together, take a group photo. This will be a great addition to your child’s new room.

2. Find out where the children in your new neighborhood go to school
There is a chance that the other children in your new neighborhood go to different schools. Some may go to private school while the others go to public school. Of course, it is up to you with the type of schooling that you believe is best for your children.  But let your children have a say. Your neighbors have already gone through the process of choosing a school for their children. Definitely use them as a reliable source to talk to. If there is a child in your neighborhood that goes to the same school as your child will attend, your child will feel more comfortable with getting on a bus and going to school. That child, if close in age, will probably end up being a good resource for your child to talk to as well.

3. Make sure your child gets involved in new activities.
Some children have a harder time making friends than others. No matter how old your child is, get him or her involved in at least one activity. Talk to your child and find out what he or she wants to do at the new school. It may be completely different from what he or she is interested in now. Allow your child to explore all of his or her interests. It will be easier for your child to make friends with children that share their same interests.
Always remember that no matter what situation your child is put into, he or she will adapt. Explain that this new move is an adventure to try new things, meet new people, and grow closer as a family. It is hard to move to a new school and a new neighborhood, but children are all very genuine and will flock to your child for new friendship.

Rayovac Roughneck Flashlight Review and Donation

Rayovac Roughneck Flashlight Review and Donation

A special thank you to the kind people at Rayovac for donating two of their Roughneck Flashlights for the Over Thirty Mommy Support our Troops campaign

Rayovac Roughneck lights are tough and durable. Perfect for tough jobs or toddlers!

My husband and I both keep small flashlights in our nightstands so that we can use them to check on her, our dogs or other noises we  hear around the house at night.  Recently Wiggle Bean has come to swipping them and we would find them in her room under her pillow.  She would say that it was dark and she needed it to see.  One of her favorite saying is "It's too dark in here, I can't see a thing"

The day the Rayovac Roughneck light arrived she was in heaven.  She absolutely loves opening packages that come in the mail but I have rarely ever seen her get so excited.  She laid claim to the flashlight the second the box was open.  The first thing she said was "Is that for me?"  I opened the package and let her use it.  That was the end of my claim to the Rayovac Roughneck.  It has been in her possession ever since and she absolutely loves it.  If I try to use it she says "Mommy, that is my lash light" (yes I meant to type lash, she missed the F part).

She uses it for everything from pointing to things she is talking about to looking for things in her toy box.  We recently found that with the flick of a little switch is goes from a direct beam of light to a flood light perfect for lighting up the inside of her Ladybug tent (that is sitting in the middle of my living room)

The Roughneck flashlight features a high performance LED that lasts 50,000 hours and never needs replacing.  They are impact Resistant to 10 feet and water Resistant, both necessary features for toddler fun. There is even a handy hang ring on the bottom for easy storage or for clipping on to her Backyard Safari Cargo Vest (because, who doesn't need a 120 lumens to see that little ant in the dirt)

**Disclaimer: I was not paid any form of cash for this posting.   I received one Rayovac Roughneck flashlight for the purpose of this review and two to donate to troops in Iraq.  This is solely the opinion of Over Thirty Mommy. Other people may have different experiences with the products.**

Saving Money on School Supplies

Saving Money on School Supplies
By Maggie Voelker

Next to holiday shopping, back-to-school shopping is the second largest shopping season. The average family of K-12 students plans to spend about $600 on back-to-school items this year, says the National Retail Federation. Since many of these costs—general school fees, sports fees, etc—are non-negotiable, it’s important to save moolah where you can. School supply shopping, with a little extra time and effort, can be one of these cost-savings areas. Here are some tips to checkout before you head to the stores.

Make a List
One summer, my family was on vacation at the lake right up to the beginning of the school year. Since we had less than a day at home between vacation and the first day of classes, mom decided to do school shopping on vacation. Bad idea. We didn’t have our school supply lists and ended up with millions of folders we didn’t need and we completely missed the graph paper and binders. Boy did the Voelker children feel dumb on that first day and Momma V ended up spending an exorbitant amount on school supplies that year.

If you take away nothing else, let it be the golden rule of school supply shopping—make a list. See if your school offers a checklist for students—check the stack of back-to-school papers or the school website for this bad boy. If you can’t find the list, never fear. Many office supply stores or large retail stores have kiosks with checklists for nearby schools. Bottom line, have an idea (in written form) of what you’re looking for and how much of each product.
Shop at Home
Before you even pack up the mini-van for the inevitable shopping trip, scour your home for supplies. If you don’t already have a school-supply station, create one. In our home office, there are two drawers dedicated to school supplies only. This is where extra supplies are stored throughout the year and where rulers, calculators, binders and other materials that can be recycled for the next school year are stored in the summer. Before we hit the stores each August, each child must go through the stash and ‘shop at home.’

Buy in Bulk
Shop early and buy in bulk for those items you know you’ll need (and are short of at home). Things like large packs of loose-leaf paper, notebooks and folders begin to go on sale in mid-July. Stock-up on these items as your budget allows, because remember, what you don’t send to school goes in your home supply stash for next semester or next year.

Shop Around
School supplies are popping up in unexpected stores. So breakaway from your mainstream office supply stores and head to dollar stores and craft stores where you’ll often find better prices. Speaking of prices, watch for sales. Check your local newspaper circulars to find the best deals on crayons, binders, etc. It takes a little extra time, but knowing when and where the sales are allows you to plan your shopping trip. So not only are you saving on supplies, you save on gas by not having to run back and forth to stores to return items after you find them cheaper elsewhere. Finally, if you have the circulars handy, see if your store offers price-matching; show clerks the advertisement and see if they’ll lower their price to meet the other store’s (hello gas savings).

Teach the Value of a Dollar
Those character folders and backpacks are a parent’s nemesis. As soon as a child sets their sights on one of these over-priced items, you’ll hear no end of, “Mommy please, everyone uses the Harry Potter pencils! Please, he’s my favorite! I can’t write without themmm!” Be strong.
While most parents find the Barbie folders to be an absolute waste of money, use this as an opportunity to teach your kiddos about a budget and the value of a dollar. Explain that each child has a certain amount of money they may spend, if they want that folder, then they’ll have to go for the off-brand backpack or cheaper notebooks. Not only will your children get a mini-finance lesson, they’ll be more involved in the shopping process and you’ll cut down on complaining by allowing them to have some autonomy in their purchases (i.e. don’t complain about your plain folders, you chose the Cars backpack).

Postpone the Trip
If you can get away with the supplies you have on hand for that first week of school or so, postpone your big shopping trip. Many stores have giant clearance sales just the week after school starts. This is also a great time to stock-up for next year. Bonus: No crowds.

Uniforms: Don’t Buy New Unless You Have To
Uniforms are God’s gift to parents. They simplify the morning routine and in the long-run, lead to significant savings on clothing. Unfortunately, uniforms are expensive upfront, and this savings is not realized until months later. To reduce this initial cost, don’t buy new clothing unless you must. See if your school has a used uniform sale (or start one), talk to friends with older children to see if they have hand-me-downs, or checkout local secondhand stores which usually have tons of outgrown uniform clothing. We all know how quickly children grow so there’s no shame in used uniforms. Parents unite over cost savings and are happy to help via hand-me-downs or by selling old uniforms at a school sale.

Keep these tips in mind and your pocketbook and sanity will benefit. Happy shopping!

Growing up, guest author Maggie Voelker was responsible for school shopping for herself and her three siblings while her mom worked, and she’s all too familiar with the chaos that is school supply shopping. Now a recent college graduate, she works as a content writer for an online discount socks provider, specializing in knee socks and dress socks for your kids in uniforms.

Encouraging your kids to love the outdoors

Encouraging your kids to love the outdoors
by Jess Spate

Most kid's hobbies fade away as they grow up, but a love of the outdoors can stay with a person from early childhood to retirement and beyond. People of any age who really enjoy being outside in the fresh air tend to be more active and fitter, and more aware of environmental issues. They are never short of a holiday destination and never without a new challenge. Each mountain summit reached or goal achieved builds self-esteem and independence. Of all the gifts parents can give, time spent having fun in the mountains or the woods must be one of the greatest.

There is no reason not to start young. Although pre-schoolers have to be watched even closer than usual outside the home they have a natural fascination with anything new. A rock pool on the beach is better than any toy. They'll love investigating the outdoors, and while they have fun you can start to teach them some very important lessons.

Even little kids can learn about looking out for hazards and staying safe- something that will help them as they grow up and face risks no parent can insulate them from. With your help they can develop the confidence to deal with new situations and the thoughtfulness and compassion to tread lightly in a fragile environment.
If you love the outdoors yourself, it can be frustrating when your kids don't seem to share your feelings, but there are ways to help them understand your passion. If your children would rather stay home in front of the Playstation than venture out for a walk in the woods with you, going somewhere with interesting animal life can be a great way to get them enthusiastic about the outdoors. Few children can resist the excitement of seeing bears in Yosemite or alligators in the Everglades. A weekend vacation may be all it takes to change your kid's mind about hiking.

Hiking and camping with teenagers gives you an opportunity to spend some real quality time with them, and talk without any distractions. Working together towards a shared goal- it could be the completion of a long distance footpath or reaching a high peak- is a bonding experience, something which both parents and teens need from time to time.

As kids get older you might have to introduce a little more adrenaline to keep them interested. Beginner rock climbing, white water rafting, horse trekking, and surfing are all reasonably safe pastimes with the right guide or instructor. Some, like rock climbing, are far safer than most people would imagine, and kids as young as 5 can get involved.

Don't be afraid to show nervousness when you take your kids for a day's guided climbing, mountain biking, or rafting. A little fear is nothing to be ashamed of. If you can let kids and teens see that you're afraid but standing up to fear, laughing at your mistakes and trying again, that gives them one great example of how to live life.

Jess Spate is a former rock climbing instructor, writer, and outdoor enthusiast. She works for Appalachian Outdoors, where you can find a wide range of kids outdoor gear and believes that camping, climbing, and swimming outdoors is the best fun a family can have.

MAJOR Ground Turkey Recall

Arkansas Firm Recalls Ground Turkey Products Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, a Springdale, Ark. establishment, is recalling approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with a multi-drug resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall today bear the establishment number "P-963" inside the USDA mark of inspection.  Click here for list of products

These products were distributed at the retail level nationwide. Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation requests that consumers who may have purchased these products return them to the point-of-purchase.

RETAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST

This recall follows a July 29, 2011 FSIS Public Health Alert that was initiated due to concerns about illnesses caused by Salmonella Heidelberg that may be associated with use and consumption of ground turkey. A total of 79 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg have been reported from 26 states between March 1 and August 3, 2011. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Heidelberg is resistant to several commonly prescribed antibiotics. Among the ill persons with available information, 22 (38%) have been hospitalized and 1 death has been reported. As a result of the epidemiologic and traceback investigations, as well as in-plant findings, FSIS determined that there is a link between the Cargill ground turkey products and this illness outbreak. FSIS is continuing to work with CDC, affected state public health partners, and the company on the investigation.

Preparing Your Kids for their Dental Visit

Preparing Your Kids for their Dental Visit
 by Warner Carter

Most kids will dislike the idea of having to go to the dentist. You can’t fault them; there is a lot negative connotation attached to dentists. Even some adults cannot help but be scared when they realize that they need to go to the dentist. Despite any inevitable protestations, parents should be adamant that their kids keep up with their scheduled dental appointments.

Good oral health starts when one is young especially since there is much weight attached to the preventing the development of cavities and tooth decay. According to the American Dental Association, children should have their first visit to the dentist within six months after the eruption of the first tooth but no later than their first birthday. This first visit is necessary to check the state of the baby’s mouth and also so that parents can receive advice from their baby’s dentist.

It is normal for parents to feel nervous about their baby’s first dental appointment. But as long as one knows what to expect, then there is nothing to fear. Generally, the dentist will take a look at the kid’s milk teeth and check for signs of tooth decay or any existing cavities. At the same time, the dentist should be able to assess the child’s tendency to develop tooth decay. While at the dental clinic, parents are encouraged to share any habits which may ruin their kid’s teeth like thumb sucking or misusing sippy cups. The dentist should also share tips and insight on how and why it is important to clean primary teeth.

After this first visit to the dentist, the next dental appointment should be at least six months after. Ideally, dental visits should have six months intervals. If the dentist finds that your child is prone to having tooth decay, then it is normal for him or her to schedule visits more frequently. The reason for why appointments have to be scheduled regularly is so that dentist can remove any plaque which have formed as well as provide fluoride treatment if required. The dentist should also be able to assess the child’s jawbones and oral tissues to determine any potential problems that may arise in the future.

In order to lessen your child’s anxiety, it is necessary for parents to talk to their kids prior to going to the dentist. Parents should explain the upcoming procedure and reassure the child that mom or dad will be close by throughout the entire time.

Tips for Weaning Babies from a Pacifier

Tips for Weaning Babies from a Pacifier
by Lauren Tessin

Gracie runs MyGetRidOfGuide.com, a website that can offer several solutions to your most unwanted problems.
Pacifiers for babies help them produce saliva, serving as a natural antiseptic that is good for oral hygiene. Not only do they calm them in an uncomfortable situation, but they can also help them fall asleep soundly.  Though it becomes very soothing for babies, this can cause them dental problems if they continue to suck on them for long periods of time. It also becomes very aggravating whenever they have an outburst because they can’t have their pacifier.
Although pacifiers are great for newborns and babies under the age of about 6 months, after that you should skip out on this habit before it gets out of control.
There are several ways to wean your baby of their pacifier. If you want to know more about them, read below.
How to Wean Your Baby:
•    You can start off gradually by telling them that pacifiers are only for bed time. This is to soothe them while they go to sleep. You can also slowly take out the pacifier during their nap time. After a couple of days, they should be able to adjust to the changes.
•    Instead of giving them the pacifier, you can have them trade it with another toy or activity. And instead of giving them the pacifier at night time, give them a stuffed animal instead or a blanket.
•    Have them play with other children who are non-pacifier sucking playmates, so that they can see that and hopefully copy them.
•    You can try giving them rewards if they go through a day without a pacifier. And if they do, try giving them lots of hugs, kisses and praise so that they will feel that they have accomplished something.
•    You should be consistent with your actions. If you start to stop giving them the pacifier during the bed time, you should stick to it to avoid confusion.
•    If they do a good job, be sure to award them with something special, perhaps a new toy.
•    Make sure you never give in.  Once you do, they’ll think they can cry their way into you giving them what they want – in this case, a pacifier.
The first attempt of weaning their pacifiers may fail, but you should try to bear with it and try not to give in with her crying and tantrums. Your hard work should pay off in a couple of days.
