Another Children's Medicine Recall: Four PediaCare Products

Blacksmith Brands, Inc., in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is voluntarily recalling all lots of four children’s products in the PediaCare line. These products are sold exclusively in the United States. These products were manufactured for Blacksmith Brands by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a Division of McNeil-PPC, Inc., (a Johnson & Johnson Company) at McNeil’s Fort Washington, PA plant.

The four PediaCare items involved in the recall are:
1. PediaCare Multi-Symptom Cold 4oz. UPC # 3 0045-0556-05 9
2. PediaCare Long Acting Cough 4oz. UPC# 3 0045-0465-04 7
3. PediaCare Decongestant 4oz. UPC# 3 0045-0554-04 8
4. PediaCare Allergy and Cold 4oz. UPC# 3 0045-0552-04 4

Blacksmith Brands initiated the recall as a precautionary step because the products were made at the McNeil Consumer Healthcare Fort Washington, PA plant that has been temporarily shut down. A recent FDA inspection at that facility found serious problems in meeting the FDA’s current good manufacturing practice requirements. The recall was not initiated as a result of any consumer reports of adverse events and no consumer complaints have been received about the safety or purity of the products.

While the recall was not initiated as a result of either any consumer reports of adverse events or complaints with respect to the PediaCare products, tiny particles have been found in other non-PediaCare products which were manufactured at the McNeil plant.

While the potential for serious medical events is remote, the company advises consumers who have purchased these recalled products to discontinue use. Blacksmith Brands is asking Retail and Wholesale customers to withdraw the four products from their shelves and warehouses and return the product to Blacksmith Brands.
Consumers with questions may contact Blacksmith Brands on Friday, May 28th 5pm – 9pm EST; Saturday-Monday 9am-5pm EST; and normal business hours thereafter at (888) 474-3099. More information is available at blacksmithbrands.com.

Any adverse events that may be related to the use of these products should be reported to the FDA’s Med Watch Program by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178 or by mail at Med Watch, HF-2, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787. or on the Med watch website at http:www.fda.gov/safety/medwatch/default.htm
“We’re taking this voluntary step because protecting consumers and maintaining their trust are essential to our company’s core values,” said Blacksmith Brands Chairman and CEO Peter Mann. “Our brands have a heritage that has made them the favorites of millions of families and we are the guardians of that heritage.”
To provide these valued products to consumers again as quickly as possible, Blacksmith Brands has arranged to make them at new manufacturing plants and expects to resume shipments of the recalled items in July from those new facilities.

Items not involved in this recall are PediaCare Allergy 4oz., PediaCare Gentle Vapors Plug in Units, and PediaCare Gentle Vapors refills, all of which are produced in other facilities.

Tea Collection Childrens Clothing Review

With warm weather (hopefully) on the way soon, I was excited to start shopping for great summer clothing for Wiggle Bean.  With her walking, running, and jumping around this year, it was important for me to find her high quality clothing that could withstand her rambunctiousness.

I received a catalog from Tea Collection Children's Clothing and was showing it to my best friend.  She went on and on about how great they were and how much her daughter loved her Tea Collection wear.  She said they were high quality, really adorable and very durable.  Those all sound like what I was looking for.

After spending hours online viewing all of the great clothing available at Tea Collection, I decided that the Choon-Hee daily Tea Set would be the perfect base to Wiggle's Summer wear.

This set includes the:
  • Iris flutter sleeve top
  • Love bird top
  • Hummingbird sleeveless tunic
  • Stripe skort in lily pad
  • Solid french terry shorts in raspberry
This set is perfect because the three shirts coordinate beautifully with both the skort and shorts.  Even daddy can't send her to daycare mismatched with this beautiful set.

Just look how versatile the Tea Collection is!  You can talk on the phone, trek with penguins and cook your mommy dinner, all while looking adorable!  You can even go horse back riding !

STAY TUNED, I WILL BE HOSTING A TEA COLLECTION WHEN THEY RELEASE THEIR NEW FALL LINE, JUST IN TIME FOR BACK TO SCHOOL!

Episencial Actively Healthy Skincare Review and Giveaway CLOSED

My husband and I are cautious of bath products that we use on Wiggle Bean.  We do not like all the chemicals in traditional soaps and shampoos.  We try to find more natural alternatives for her, and we need lots of them because I think she is half fish.  She LOVES her bath time.

When I was approached by Episencial to review their natural products, I jumped at the chance.  I received four Episencial products: Sweet Dreams Bubble Bath, Playful Foaming Wash, Better Body Butter, and Protective Face Balm to test out.  I tried them first (always try Wiggle's products on myself before she uses them) and then Bean tried them.

Episencial was created by founder, Kim Walls – a skin care expert from the Epicuren family – because she couldn’t find products for her young sons that met her standards.  She, and many other parents, was looking for products that are:
Episencial is the first skin care company to develop all natural and sustainable products specifically for today’s actively healthy families and their green values.  Their products are designed to support the skin’s role in the body’s immune system to promote health and wellness as well as beauty.  Each product was created to address the special needs of baby and child skin and is inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar's favorite fruits from Eric Carle.

Better Body Butter

I love lotions but decided to put most of mine away when Wiggle came along because I did not want her to ingest or absorb any of the chemicals they contained.  The Better Body Butter is made from Organic olive oil, shea butter, and sunflower seed oil to restore natural skin lipids (Helps prevent cradle cap and scaly skin);  Organic lavender and geranium oils to sooth and calm the skin, as well as preserve product freshness; Calming oat extract to boost skin immunity; and Organic jojoba and avocado oils to help replenish essential fatty acid levels for proper hydration.

Many lotions dry out my skin rather than moisturize but I did not have that problem at all with the Episencial Better Body Butter.  Bean liked it too, it was so cute when she held out her hands for a drop and said Rub?

Playful Foaming Wash
The Playful Foaming Wash is an ultra pure hydrating hair & body cleanser.  It won’t irritate eyes or sensitive places, it is sulfate free, Fragrance free (Organic orange extract is used for the mild and fresh scent).

I love the scent of this wash so much that I put my own bottle of soap away so that I could share this one with my daughter.  She love it also.  It is light and rinses clean with no soapy residue feeling afterward.

Sweet Dreams Bubble Bath
This was by far Wiggle's favorite.  She loves bubble baths and we found this bubble bath to have a great scent and a good amount of bubbles.

The long lasting bubble gel is enhanced  from natural, sugar derived surfactants. It contains organic avocado oil, soothing oat extract, organic ginko biloba, green tea extract, mandarin orange, organic lavender oil with plum and peach extract.

The lavender oil is great for a nice calming bath before bed time!It helps her relax and prepare for sleepy time.

Protective Face Balm with SPF 6

The Protective Face Balm provides all-over relief for chapped skin & lips.  It contains organic aloe vera, coco butter, and shea butter, for soothing protection for dry, chapped skin. It also has Zinc SPF 6 for healing and protection from sun, wind, and pollution. The Protective Face Balm is fortified with vitamins A, D, E, and C to help restore and repair skin balance and texture. The balm is also packed with organic raspberry juice, cranberry extract, and grape seed to revitalize skin.

Since we are in the Pacific Northwest, there is not a lot of wind (or sun yet!) to chap skin but I tend to get chapped lips in the winter.  I have found the Episencial Protective Face Balm to be great for preventing chapped skin.  It is light enough to use daily and does not have an overbearing scent.

Review and Giveaway: ImagiPLAY Earth Friendly Child Safe Toys CLOSED

I can't be the only mom that has noticed a decline in the quality of craftsmanship in toys.  Every where I turn toys are made of plastic.  I love finding companies that make quality wooden toys for my little one.  Not only are they adorable but they tend to last longer and are eco-friendly.

About ImagiPLAY
(taken from site)
ImagiPLAY has created high-quality educational toys that inspire children's imaginations and the desire to explore. With the abundance of toys available for children today, ImagiPLAY sets itself apart from the rest through its motto: "Toys with Integrity." By producing quality products that connect with nature, have eco-friendly sources, and hold educational value, ImagiPLAY works to benefit the earth we share and the people that inhabit it. All of ImagiPLAY's toys are made from eco-friendly materials, with plantation-grown rubberwood being a favorite.

Products
ImagiPLAY offers many toys that I think would make great additions to Wiggle Bean's toy box.

We received the 3 Chicks puzzle for the purpose of the review and found it to be adorable.   3 Chicks is a 6pc hand-crafted, hand-painted 3 Chicks puzzle.  Wiggle Bean is only 15 months but since the puzzle is made from large pieces, it is easy for her to grasp the pieces and fit them together.

Another one of my favorites is the Fruit Cutting Set.  It has 17 pieces and helps children develop motor skills and coordination while encouraging them to learn about healthy food in a fun, role play environment. Segmented and secured with velcro, for cutting over and over again. This would be a perfect addition to Wiggle Bean's kitchen.

I also think that Wiggle would benefit greatly from the  CircleBlocks.  They are a beautiful set of circular nesting blocks that fit together flat to make designs or stacked.  It also includes 52 multilingual Pattern Cards in 3 skill levels. This would be an excellent (and fun) learning tool.

Educational
ImagiPLAY has a very interesting Learning Section that helps teach you and your children all about different animals.  It teaches you about the animal and will suggest products that match the animal you are studying.

Where to Buy
In the USA, our toys are currently available online and in most Whole Foods Market Stores as well as quality specialty retailers across the country.  Please call our office for a store near you:  800-882-0217

What Do You Do When Your Child's Favorite Toy Gets Old?

I was given the most adorable little bear/blanket toy at one of my baby showers.   I decided right then that I wanted it to be one of Wiggle's favorite toys (Looking back at it now, that was the beginning of the end for me) and gave him to her to play with every chance I got.  The picture above is of her sleeping with him (even though all the "experts" say no stuffed animals in cribs) when she was just a few days old.  It was so cute to see her snuggled up with him.

She LOVES that little bear!  Now that she can talk, she has named him Baby.  The first word she says almost every morning is "Baby" (as she holds him up for me to kiss him and to show me that he is still there)

She will not go to bed with out baby and as hard as I try to keep him in bed, she loves to drag him all over the house, in the car and to daycare.   She will reach through the bars of her crib and yank him out just so she can have him.  Some times while playing she will let him go and you can sneak him away by tucking him under a shirt and slipping him back in bed with out her noticing.  Other days, you are not so lucky.

When Wiggle was six months old we went to Wyoming to visit my husbands parents and of course Baby (the toy) had to come with us.  All was well until the day we discovered a little tear where the yellow satin attaches to the hem of the white blanket part.  Grandma got her a replacement baby that was a cute pink Winnie the Pooh version to tide us over until she could perform surgery on baby to repair the tear.  We made it (barley) through one nap time with the impostor baby before it became evident that there was not going to be bed time with out real baby.  All was well and good once he was fixed up.

We have a couple other "fake" babies but she will have nothing to do with them.  She will throw them on the floor and say (sometimes scream) NO, followed by the biggest tears you have ever seen and sobs of "baby" until she sees him.  She will not play with them and she will not sleep with them.

With her dragging baby all over, he is getting dingy and ratty.  She loves to share he snacks with him, mangoes are one of his favorites as are strawberry smoothies. No matter how much I try to wash him up, I just can not keep him clean.  All the washing has caused his white microfiber body to become clumpy and his satin is starting to snag.  In an effort to avoid the inevitable melt down when he falls apart and she can not have him anymore, I set out to find a spare baby for backup purposes, so that we can rotate them one in the wash one in the bed.

I looked every where with no luck.  I tries to find her another one she would like at the store but she would just say no and toss it down.  I looked on Ebay but they wanted a ridiculous $30-40 for the once $9.99 bear.  I finally resorted to emailing Gerber to see where I could find him, only to find out that he was indeed discontinued and that they changed the style.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I would like to say that this was only in my head but I am pretty sure that some of it was out loud)

What was I going to do?  There was no way my husband was going to buy one for 4 times his original cost but how could I let $40 come between my daughter and her happiness that is Baby.  I told my husband about baby being discontinued and how Ebay was the only place to get him.  I was not even sure if a replacement real baby would work.  What if I bought him and she rejected him?  My husband and I decided that we had no choice and that we would get her one from Ebay.  I set out to find the best deal I could and finally after some waiting was able to get one for $28.

The day he arrived was the true test of  if Baby could have a backup.  We sat on the floor with the box and I unwrapped him.  Then I hear the best word come from my daughter, BABY!

SUCCESS!!!!!!

I was barley able to get the tags off of him before she snagged him away from me and off her and baby went to play.  At one point she gave him to me and I put him on my lap.  She then came over to me and put her little head down on him and gave him some love pats.

Yes, I spent 3 times his original cost on a replacement toy.  What was I supposed to do? let her be sad.

What do you do when your child's favorite toy wears out?
