MAJOR RECALL: Stork Craft to Recall More Than 2.1 Million Drop-Side Cribs

Infant Entrapment and Suffocation Prompts Stork Craft to Recall More Than 2.1 Million Drop-Side Cribs

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, today announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. The recall involves approximately 1,213,000 units distributed in the United States and 968,000 units distributed in Canada.
CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. They should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side on these cribs to a fixed side.
The cribs’ drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. In addition, the drop-side can be installed upside-down, which can result in broken or disengaged plastic parts. All of these problems can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space which can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment of drop-sides can lead to falls from the crib.
CPSC, Health Canada, and Stork Craft are aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment; 67 incidents occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada. The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three in Canada. Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y.; a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La.; a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va.; and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y. Included in these incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to bumps and bruises. The cribs involved in these incidents had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down.
This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side. This recall does not involve any cribs with metal rod drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.
This recall includes Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm’s insignia “storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. In Stork Craft cribs that contain the “Fisher-Price” logo, this logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.
Major retailers in the United States and Canada sold the recalled cribs including BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009 for between $100 and $400.
The cribs were manufactured in Canada, China and Indonesia.
For additional information, contact Stork Craft toll-free at (877) 274-0277 anytime to order the free repair kit, or log on to www.storkcraft.com

Important Message from CPSC:

CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop-side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib, especially with tape, wire or rope.
Note: Health Canada’s press release can be seen at http://cpsr-rspc.hc-sc.gc.ca/PR-RP/recall-retrait-eng.jsp?re_id=888

UPDATE: Car Seat Shopping

UPDATE: I am still car seat shopping, this is a big decision but one I need to make soon since Wiggle is officially to tall for her infant seat.

I was leaning towards the Britax Marathon car seat but one of my readers suggested the RECARO Signo car seat( I have never heard of this seat before).

Does anyone have experience with either of these car seats?

Maybe I should get one of each since I have to buy two (one for me and one for daycare).

Who would have thought that car seat shopping would be such an ordeal.  Not me, that is for sure.

Before Wiggle Bean was born we found a Graco travel system on sale a Target.  It included the Snugride car seat and a full size stroller.  It was a cute pattern and a great price so we bought it with out thinking much about it.  I ever even thought about what I would do when she got a little bigger.  The Snugride fits until 22 pounds and 29 inches.  This is my first baby so I had no idea how quickly they grew but figured this would last at least the first year and probably even longer.

Wiggle is 9 1/2 months and weighs around 18 pounds. So that should give us another good 5 pounds, per the manufacturer, before she is  too big for her infant seat, right?  WRONG!!!  I gave birth to a bean pole.  She is already at (past) the 29' height recommended limit for the seat.

So now the research begins to find the safest most comfortable seat available.  We would like our next seat to last for a while so we are putting a little more effort into the search.  I found some great sites that rate convertible car seats.

After much research I have narrowed it down to 5 (in no particular order)

Britax Marathon and Boulevard

Graco  My Ride 65

Evenflo Symphony

Safety 1st Complete Air and Alpha Omega Elite

Every where I look tells me different things about which one is rated the best so I am turning to you, my readers to tell me your experiences.

Which seat worked best for you and what features did you like or dislike?

Review: Chocolate A love Story

Anyone that knows me knows I love everything chocolate.  OK, maybe not everything, I do not like chocolate covered espresso beans (not a coffee fan) and I would not eat chocolate covered grasshoppers (Gross!).  Other than that, I am pretty sure I love everything chocolate.

If I had to rate the types of chocolate it would go Dark Chocolate (the darker the better), White Chocolate (YUM!!!), then milk chocolate (nothing against milk chocolate).

When the opportunity to review a new chocolate recipe book, I jumped on it more because I love chocolate and would love to learn how to make some great treats (way more than wanting to cook, since I am not a great cook!).

Chocolate A Love Story by Max Brenner is so much more than your average cookbook.  This is the bible of chocolate cookbooks.  (can you say that it is a bible of cookbooks without being smitted?)  It contains 65 Chocolate dessert recipes from Max Brenner's private collection.

There are some of the most decadent recipes in this book that I have ever seen.  A few that I am totally drooling over are the Painful white chocolate truffles, Kinky Pavlova, and the Veg-out chocolate cornflake TV wraps.

The art work could be a book on its own.  Yonatan Factor did some amazing work.  It is not your typical cookbook art.  While it would have been nice to see what the finished recipes were supposed to look like, the are is really interesting.  A few of the recipes, like the Veg-out chocolate cornflake TV wraps, have photo type pictures of the actual dessert while other recepis, like the Handsome Tiramisu, have pictures of a car (not sure how that is related to Chocolate).

Product Description: (from Publisher)

With gigantic vats of churning chocolate, desserts like their famous chocolate pizza, and 12 varieties of hot chocolate served in custom mugs, Max Brenner, Chocolate by the Bald Man has turned their line of hip, colorful themed restaurants into an international sensation..   Chocolate: A Love Story is a vibrant new cookbook that includes 65 original recipes narrated in the quirky, captivating voice of Max Brenner, the restaurant’s visionary founder and "bald man." Bold original illustrations inspired by Art Deco poster graphics, full-color photographs, easy-to-follow, delicious recipes, and a serving of Max’s unique vision for spreading "chocolate culture" around the world make this book a must for every chocolate lover.

About Max Brenner: (from Publisher)

Max Brenner is a confectioner, businessman, and above all, a passionate lover of chocolate. He began his career as an apprentice throughout Europe, where he worked in the best kitchens alongside renowned pastry chefs. It was in Europe that his love for chocolate evolved into passion, leading him to open a small chocolate workshop in his homeland of Israel. Many years later, Max Brenner: Chocolate by the Bald Man is now a thriving international brand, committed to spreading Max’s vision of Chocolate Culture to the world.

Buy it:

Chocolate: A Love Story can be bought for $29.99 US from the Hachette site or from these retailers.

I was given the opportunity to review this product because of my membership at The Product Review Place.

**Disclaimer: I was not paid in any form of cash for this posting.  I did receive a copy of the book to keep for my testing purposes. This is solely the opinion of Over Thirty Mommy. Other people may have different experiences with the product.**

Review and Giveaway: Fairy-Gram CLOSED

I was given the opportunity to review the most adorable  Fairy-Gram as a "costume" for my daughter to wear to a baby shower that I was hosting.

As much as I love to put my daughter in Pink (she wore pink under the fairy outfit), I selected the turquoise gram since the shower was for a boy and I wanted her outfit to "match" the decorations.  She was so cute, and was quickly dubbed the Shower Fairy.

We receive the Fairy-Gram shortly before Halloween but I had already decided Wiggle Bean would be a Ladybug this year for her first Halloween.

The Fairy-Gram came beautifully packaged and was waiting on our doorstep when we got home.  The box contained a beautiful Tutu skirt with flower petals between the layers, fabulous fairy wings, 2 butterfly hair clips, a head band, and wand.  The head band was very pretty but Wiggle did not use it because she kept wanting to eat it.  We put it aside to save for when she is a little bigger. We had a bunch of fun with the wand.  We both got great use out of it, it became the official shower wand.

Fairy-Grams come one size fits all and will last many years.  Their website says they fit from ages 1 to 8. Wiggle is 9 1/2 months now and the skirt fit her pretty well with plenty of stretch for her to wear it when she is older.  Her hair is to thin and soft to hold the hair clips so I put them on a headband and they worked perfectly.

About Fairy-Gram (for their site)
Fairy-Gram.com was founded in 2009 by a stay-at-home Mom and her 5 year old daughter. From age 2+, her daughter was always in an outfit, from princesses, to ballerina’s to fairies. Fairies were her favorite and therefore, Fairy-Gram.com was founded, directly from the heart of a 5 year old little girl.

Where to Purchase
The adorable Fairy-Grams can be purchased from Fairy-Gram.com.

Parenting Advice = Furious

**I did not let her actually eat that candy***

I know that I am a new mom but why do people feel the need to give me unsolicited parenting advice. Who do they think they are to tell me how I should or shouldn't parent my child.  If I make a mistake, that is my problem (so long as it does not jeopardize the safety of my child).

Here is what set me off today: Wiggle Bean is teething her top two front teeth right now and they are on the verge of breaking through.  She is a little more fussy at bed time than usual.  Last night I could not get her to sleep in her crib.  I would get her asleep in my arms but the second that I put her down, she would whimper and cry.  I tried teething tablets but they just were not the same as mommy snuggles.  So I ended up sleeping with her on the bed in her room.

I sent a text over to her daycare provider that said "How is she today? We had a rough sleeping night.  I think her teeth were bothering her?"

Daycare replied back: "She been fine, not fussy at all. She fell 2 sleep n my arms after u dropd her off."

My response: "Not surprising, she looked really sleepy in the car.  She would not sleep alone last night. Only slept if I held her.

Daycare replied: "Oh Mommy u gta stop doen that or else she gna rap u arond her fingr n i knw u wana spoil her bt that can be a mistake n certn situations"

followed by " It ok 2 let her cry, actually good 2 let her cry at times. Seriously i made the same mistake n let Alivia slp wit me at first n was hard 4 her 2 slp alone."

First off her spelling is terrible.  I understand Text speak but OMG, that is horrible. I might have to think twice about having her "teach" my daughter when she is older.

Secondly, what gives her the right to tell me I am making mistakes as a parent.  She regularly tells me that we spoil Wiggle Bean and let her get away with to much at home that she can not do at daycare.

Yes, she is an only child and probably always will be (no intentions of having more children) but she is not "spoiled" to the point she is a brat.  She is a great child and I am frequently told how well behaved she is for only being 9 1/2 months.

I have not yet responded to her parenting critiques.  I do not feel that I am calm enough to reply in a kind manner.

Am I over reacting? Is it common for daycare providers to tell you you are making parenting mistakes?  Would you be upset?

Recall Heads Up: Maclaren to Recall 1 Million Strollers

One of my great readers (Little Miss Olivia)  forwarded me an advance recall notice for Maclaren Strollers.

Here is the information she received from The Bump:

"Maclaren plans to publicly announce a safety recall tomorrow, November 10, on 1 million of its strollers made within the last decade. The recall comes in response to 12 separate cases reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of children having their fingertips amputated after being caught in the stroller hinge. While it’s still unclear whether the recall will apply to one specific model or all strollers made since 1999, if you currently use a Maclaren, we strongly urge you to stop using it immediately. To rectify the problem, Maclaren is offering hinge covers on their website (MaclarenBaby.com). "

I will post more details and specifics as they become available.

Review: Happy Panda Clothing for Bigger Babies

Ever since Wiggle Bean was born, she has worn different size clothing than what is listed on tags.  She was able to wear newborn clothes for maybe a week before it was too small.  Putting her in anything with feet was out of the question, her feet were huge.

When she was 3 months we were buying 6 month onsies, at six months she needed 9 month and now at 9 months we are buying 12month clothing.   The main problem we were having was with the length of clothing.  She is really tall but also thin,  so buying a size big to fit length is great but then we have issues with the waist.  Her pants will be perfect in length but if you pick her up, they fall off.   We couldn't win for loosing!

In June, I was lucky enough to win a gift card to Happy Panda from Momma To a Lil Lady [Bug].  I was so excited.  I checked out the site and fell totally in love with the Tagless Panda Leggings.  I checked over their sizing chart and noted that I would need 3-6 month size for Wiggle Bean, they only had 0-3 month available so I waited.  I checked back from time to time but never saw thew size I needed.

I waited so long that I missed my chance and my gift code expired.  I was sad but it was my fault for not paying close enough attention.  I contacted Pamela to see if there was anything that I could do but unfortunately, she had to abide by the expiration date to be fair to anyone else.  I completely understood and asked about the leggings. I guess the reason I never saw the size I wanted was because they only come in 0-3 month.  If I had known that, I would have ordered the (just as adorable) Tagless Panda Pants.

Pamela asked if I would be interested in reviewing one of their Snappies on my blog.  I jumped on the opportunity because we have almost as much trouble with onsies as we do pants.  They are either to short to snap comfortably or they are super baggy in the body and it looks like she is wearing a parachute.

Pamela sent me the most adorable Halloween snappie for Wiggle Bean to try.  Wiggle is just over 9 months now and we were sent a 3-6 month onsie.  I was concerned about the fit for all of 2 seconds.  These onsies are generous in length with out being overly baggy in the body but they are still stretchy enough for rounder babies.  The fabric that Happy Panda uses is so soft.  Even after washing it a couple times, it was buttery soft.

(The pants  in the picture above are not Happy Panda Pants and they are not Capri pants either.  This is what we deal with all the time. Fit great in the waist but way to short in the legs!)

One of my most favorite features is that the clothing is tagless.  I do not think my daughter cares (yet!) but I had (and still have) a huge issue with tags in clothing.  I have cut the tags out of almost all of my clothes.
